United Tunneling was engaged to deliver a specialist microtunneling installation as part of works connected to the City Rail project in Auckland. The job involved installing 300 metres of 560 SDR9 PE pipe at depths of up to 26 metres beneath New North Road.
Working in a busy urban environment meant surface disruption needed to be kept to a minimum while maintaining strict accuracy underground. With depth, existing infrastructure, and live traffic corridors all in play, traditional excavation wasn’t a practical option.
Using precision microtunneling methods, the team was able to complete the underground installation safely and efficiently, keeping works below ground while protecting what was happening above.
Projects like this are exactly where trenchless construction proves its value — delivering major infrastructure upgrades in tight city environments without tearing up the surface.
