Microtunneling done right across New Zealand
Microtunneling is a precision trenchless method used to install small to medium diameter pipelines underground with minimal surface disruption. It’s the go-to solution when the job is too deep, too tight, or too complex for traditional excavation.
At United Tunneling, this is the work we’re known for — taking on the jobs others avoid and delivering them with accuracy and control. Using specialist equipment and an experienced crew, we install pipelines across a wide range of ground conditions, keeping projects moving without tearing up what’s above.
How microtunneling works
Microtunneling is a remote-controlled trenchless method used to install pipelines underground with high accuracy and minimal surface disruption. It’s often used where the job is too deep, too tight, or too disruptive for traditional excavation.
Using a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM), the ground is cut and removed while pipes are hydraulically jacked into place from a launch pit. As the machine advances, spoil is continuously removed, allowing for a controlled, precise installation — even in challenging ground conditions.
Urban infrastructure installation
Ideal for installing sewer and stormwater pipelines beneath roads, buildings, and built-up areas where open trenching isn’t practical.
Road and rail crossings
Safely installs water and utility pipelines under major transport corridors without disrupting traffic or surrounding infrastructure.
River and waterway crossings
Allows for precise underground installation beneath rivers, streams, and environmentally sensitive areas.
Tight or restricted sites
Well suited for urban environments where space is limited and surface disruption needs to be kept to a minimum.
High-accuracy alignment
Delivers precise control over line and level, ideal for projects with strict engineering tolerances.
Deep or complex installations
Designed for projects that are too deep, difficult, or risky for traditional excavation methods.
Benefits of microtunneling
Tough jobs, done well.
Microtunneling – what you need to know
What pipe sizes can microtunneling install?
Typically from 150mm up to large diameter pipelines depending on project requirements.
Is microtunneling suitable for urban areas?
Yes, it is one of the most effective methods for installations in built-up environments.
How many access points are needed?
Usually only a launch pit and a receiving pit are required.
What ground conditions can it handle?
It is suitable for a wide range of soils with the right machine setup.
