Our approach
No two underground projects are the same. Ground conditions, depth, access, and surrounding infrastructure all change what’s possible. That’s why we don’t force a method onto a job — we assess the site properly, then choose the right trenchless solution for the conditions.
At United Tunneling, our approach is straightforward. We take the time to understand what’s happening on and below ground, work closely with the wider project team, and deliver the work safely, efficiently, and with as little disruption above ground as possible.
Simple process. Tough jobs. Done properly underground.
01. Assess the site
We start by getting a clear picture of the job — ground conditions, alignment, depth, access, and what’s already in the ground. This step sets the foundation for everything that follows.
02. Understand the constraints
Every site has its own challenges. We identify risks early so we can plan around them properly and avoid issues once work gets underway.
03. Choose the right method
Once we understand the site, we select the most suitable trenchless method. Whether it’s microtunneling, pipe jacking, auger boring, or pipe ramming, it comes down to matching the method to the conditions.
04. Plan the delivery
We work alongside engineers, contractors, and project managers to plan the job properly. That includes sequencing, access, equipment setup, and making sure everything is ready before we start.
05. Get to work
Our crew gets on site with specialist equipment and gets the job done. We focus on accuracy, safety, and keeping disruption to a minimum for everything happening above ground.
We work alongside contractors, councils, and engineering partners across New Zealand
Equipment we rely on.
Getting underground work right isn’t just about experience — it’s also about having the right gear for the job. We use high-quality German-made tunnelling equipment known for its precision, reliability, and performance in demanding ground conditions.
Alongside that, we also design and build specialist equipment in-house here in New Zealand. Our workshop allows us to adapt, modify, and create solutions when standard gear doesn’t quite fit the job.
It’s a practical approach — if we need something to get the work done properly, we make it happen. That mix of proven international equipment and Kiwi-built innovation is what keeps us moving on complex projects across the country.
